Jumpstart’s Volleyball Club was established because we love the game of volleyball, love to see players enjoy it, regardless of ability and believe volleyball is a game that can be played into adulthood. We also believe that volleyball can be an avenue to build character in athletes that have lifelong effects. We believe that children/athletes are like clay that will be shaped, molded, and influenced by people they meet and by activities in which they engage. At Jumpstart, we realize that we will have an influence on children/athletes. We do not hold a   in-at-all-costs coaching philosophy but advocate a positive coaching approach to build    self-esteem.

Jumpstart’s coaching philosophy is in line with Positive Coaching Alliance (positivecoach.org ); a Stanford based non-profit organization whose mission is To transform youth sports so sports can transform youth. Both founders of Jumpstart are charter members of Positive Coaching Alliance and also believe in the Double-Goal Coach approach, which wants to win but balances it with building character.

We define a winner as someone who puts forth the maximum effort both in practice and games, is constantly learning in practice and games and refuses to let mistakes or fear of making mistakes stop them from learning and putting forth the effort.

Children respond better with positive affirmations than negative comments. Research has shown that the ratio 5:1 (praise to criticism) is ideal. If the child’s emotional tank is low, they feel discouraged. If the emotional tank is filled, the athlete exhibits self-confidence, fun and performs better. We stress positive coaching methods with all our coaches.

Additionally, we stress sound fundamentals beginning with good footwork and developing to the more advanced skills in the older age groups. Players who come to Jumpstart finish the season with sound fundamentals and are versed in all aspects of the game of volleyball.

Our goal at Jumpstart is to have players learn the game of volleyball, compete at their highest level and finish the season with a positive view of themselves and the game of volleyball.
